San Sebastián to host the Spanish Glaucoma Society's 19th Congress during World Glaucoma Week

The 19th Congress of the Spanish Glaucoma Society (SEG), to be held in San Sebastián's Kursaal Conference Centre from 6 to 8 March, will assemble over 600 practitioners specialising in glaucoma research and treatment. The event, promoted at local level by Dr. Aritz Urcola, Head of Service at Araba University Hospital, and Dr. Iñaki Rodriguez-Agirretxe, a doctor at Donostia University Hospital, has financial backing from Donostia San Sebastián Turismoa, the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council, and also the Kursaal itself, through a collaboration agreement.

The congress will be addressing some salient issues in the field of ophthalmology. One of the main symposiums is "Glaucoma 360", coordinated by Dr. Javier Aritz Urcola, which will home in on an integral approach to patients with glaucoma. The discussions will perform an analysis of various lifestyles and habits which can have adverse effects on the affliction, and also the possible psychological repercussions of glaucoma on patients and their surrounding environment. Moreover, the master lecture "Patients’ perceptions on ocular drug delivery devices" delivered by Prof. Karl Mercieca will provide an insight into the perception of patients with respect to such devices. Another leading issue will be the symposium on "Applications of artificial intelligence in glaucoma (GlaucoClub IA)", moderated by Prof. Javier Moreno Montañés and Dr. Alfonso Antón López, which will investigate how artificial intelligence can become part of the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma.

This congress is being held during World Glaucoma Week from 10 to 16 March, with the theme "Uniting for a glaucoma-free world”, highlighting the importance of early detection and global collaboration to prevent the blindness that can be caused by this affliction.
