A June Highlighted by Scientific Conferences Specialized in Language Neuroscience, Quantum Technology, and Materials Science

Donostia / San Sebastián will host during the month of June a series of notable professional gatherings specializing in areas such as language neuroscience, quantum technology, and materials science. The Convention Bureau has registered a total of 14 events, among which the city’s commitment to attracting conferences linked to science and knowledge development stands out.

Featured Conferences in June

June 4–6: WILD – Workshop on Infant Language Development (7th Edition)

The first major meeting will take place at the Gipuzkoa Science and Technology Park, where the Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language (BCBL) is organizing the seventh edition of WILD – Workshop on Infant Language Development. With an expected participation of 200 professionals and a scientific committee comprised of eight BCBL researchers, WILD returns to Donostia after its successful editions in 2013 and 2022 to share the latest advances in speech perception and production, word learning, syntax and morphology development, as well as brain neuroimaging techniques in infants (EEG, NIRS). In addition, the conference will address topics such as atypical language development, early bilingualism, and the role of culture and gestures in child communication, in a format designed to strengthen collaboration among linguists, psychologists, and neuroscientists.

June 9–13: International Symposium on Bilingualism (ISB)

The premier event on bi- and multilingualism will take place at the Kursaal Conference Center with the International Symposium on Bilingualism (ISB), which will bring together one thousand researchers from over 50 countries under the scientific direction of BCBL as local promoter. The ISB is the biennial reference forum on bi-/multilingualism, where education, linguistics, neuroscience, and psychology researchers share theoretical and applied advances.

June 10–12: Lit-Up Congress + Galeusca Publishers’ Meeting

The Association of Basque-language Publishers (EEE) will transform Donostia into the capital of European publishing with the joint celebration of the Lit-Up International Congress and the Galeusca Publishers’ Meeting.

Lit-Up is an ambitious project co-financed by the European Union through Creative Europe, coordinated by the Associació d’Editorials del País Valencià (AEPV), with Euskal Editoreen Elkartea collaborating as a partner. After three and a half years of work, Lit-Up will conclude its journey in 2025.

The Galeusca Publishers’ Meeting is one of the main associations of publishers in Basque, Catalan, and Galician, aiming to analyze, compare, and support each other in their book production policies within these multilingual contexts. Over the course of these days, fifty industry professionals will explore strategies to strengthen the equality of minority languages in the face of major global languages through literature.

June 14–16: CECIMO Spring Meeting (European Committee for Cooperation of the Machine Tool Industries)

In the technological and industrial sphere, the Catalonia Donosti Hotel will gather about one hundred representatives at the CECIMO Spring Meeting, a conference organized by the Spanish Association of Machine Tool Manufacturers (AFM) in collaboration with the European Committee for Machine Tools. Executives and experts will debate the digitalization of manufacturing processes, workshop automation, sustainability strategies, as well as the implications of tariff policies on the sector’s competitiveness at the continental level.

June 15–18: International Colloids Conference

Materials science will also have its space at the Kursaal Conference Center, which will host the 14th International Colloids Conference, where researchers from around the world will explore applications of colloids and interfaces in fields as diverse as nanoscience, catalysis, and biomedicine.

In the conference organized by Elsevier, the global publishing leader in scientific, technical, and medical literature, discussions will cover advanced materials for energy generation and storage, adaptive surfactants, smart membranes, and new approaches in nanomedicine and medical diagnostics, also presenting experimental innovations such as atomic force microscopy and cutting-edge spectroscopies.

June 16–20: 10th EFRJ Summer School – European Forum of Restorative Justice

The Carlos Santamaría Center at the University of the Basque Country (EHU) will host the tenth edition of the Summer School organized by the European Forum of Restorative Justice, led by Gema Varona, Director of the Basque Institute of Criminology EHU – IVAC/KREI, and Enbaxadore of Donostia / San Sebastián for attracting the 17th INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM OF THE WORLD SOCIETY OF VICTIMOLOGY to the city in 2022. This summer course explores organizational harm and restorative justice strategies to repair it. Aimed at facilitators, policymakers, researchers, and institutional leaders, the program combines keynote lectures, practical workshops, and case studies to apply restorative approaches in educational, healthcare, and corporate contexts.

June 16–20: Quantum Algorithms in Pre-Fault Tolerant Hardware – BASQIBM25

The Miramar Palace will also host, from June 16 to 20, BASQIBM25, a conference that will gather 200 professionals co-organized by Geza Giedke (DIPC & Ikerbasque), Enrique Rico (CERN & EHU & Ikerbasque), and Kristan Temme (IBM).

Under the title “Quantum Algorithms in Pre-Fault Tolerant Hardware,” this meeting seeks to foster synergy among physicists, engineers, and mathematicians to explore the potential of the first pre-fault-tolerant quantum devices. Sessions will include presentations on hybrid algorithms, classical approximation methods, and large-scale experiments, with the goal of mapping out roadmaps for applications in quantum chemistry, materials science, and process optimization.

June 25–28: Graphene Conference

To close the month, the Kursaal Conference Center will host the largest European event on graphene and two-dimensional materials. The 15th Graphene Conference, organized by Phantom in collaboration with the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC), is recognized as Europe’s premier event on graphene and 2D materials. This conference will bring together top researchers and industry leaders. Presentations will cover everything from advanced material synthesis to applications in electronics, sensors, energy storage, and biomedicine. Additionally, poster sessions and B2B meetings will be organized to foster technology transfer and international collaboration.
